At the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, there was an unexpected moment when the award for best original song in a motion picture went to “Naatu Naatu” from RRR by Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani and Rahul Sipligunj. It was up against stiff competition from Taylor Swift’s “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing, Lady Gaga and BloodPop’s “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, and Rihanna’s comeback song “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as well as Roeben Katz and Guillermo del Toro’s “Ciao Papa” from Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.Keeravani accepted the award from presenter Jenna Ortega, the star of Netflix’s Wednesday. He began his speech, expressing his surprise and stating that the award belonged to someone else. He went on to thank the film’s director, as well as the song’s lyricist, animator and programmer.

In addition to Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna, Selena Gomez also gained recognition with a Golden Globe nomination – not for her music, but for her acting in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building opposite Steve Martin and Martin Short, both of whom were also nominated in the same category. Zendaya received a nomination for best actress in a TV series, drama, for her role in HBO’s Euphoria, while Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) was nominated for best actor in a TV series, musical or comedy, for his part in Atlanta. The 80th annual Golden Globe Awards, held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, and broadcasted on NBC, featured Sheryl Lee Ralph, nominated for best supporting actress, TV for her role in Abbott Elementary, and Jerrod Carmichael as the host.
